Episode 4
What are Enzymes?
Did you know that only 200 of the over 80,000 chemicals being used have been studied for human safety? And of those 80,000 20% are actually kept as trade secrets? We have no idea of the affects these chemicals are having on our bodies or even know when we might be exposed to them on a daily basis. This makes it almost impossible to manage our exposure.
A couple of weeks ago I shared 2 common chemicals of concern; phthalates & triclosan. These two chemicals are in many common household cleaners so how can we avoid them?
Obviously our first choice is to clean without chemicals which is mechanically cleaning. We simply use an Envirocloth & water (refer to episode 1). 2nd is to clean with safe cleaning solutions. Products where you know the ingredients and those ingredients are safe for us to use, our homes, and our environment.
An alternative is a cleaning product that uses the power of enzymes to clean. You might be asking; what is an enzyme? Enzymes are proteins that function as a natural catalyst. Meaning that they are certain processes like breaking down dirt & stains happen more efficiently. They are useful, environmentally friendly cleaning agents because they break down soils & stains so they can be easily washed away with water. A very small amount of enzyme proteins can provide a significant cleaning benefit, offsetting large amounts of conventional ingredients required for many brand name products that are used in homes today. Enzymes are naturally occurring, and many years of testing have proven them to be safe. We need to choose products that have enzyme based formulas because incorporating enzymes allows for the reduction of other harmful chemicals. It has a high cleaning power without the large volume of product. (It’s a super concentration formula means packaging is usually much smaller and the product can be used at full strength or diluted depending on need). It is not petroleum based. It is biodegradable & milder than harsh surfactants. It has low toxicity for humans and is dafe for the environment; which has been proven scientifically. (super important!!!)
Industrial enzymes originate from biological systems; they contribute to sustainable development by being isolated from microorganisms which are ferments using mostly renewable resources – so what I am really saying in terms we can all understand is this: Enzymes are safer, more natural way to clean when you need to use an actual cleaner. Choose enzyme based cleaners because they are safe and sustainable way to clean all those tough dirt and grime situations you might have.

Episode 3
How To Ditch The Paper Towel Habit
I love Nature, especially walking through a forest shortly after a rain. The negative Ions mixing with the earth gives me such a tranquil feeling. So crisp and clean. Trees are the best. They come in so many varieties, sizes, shapes and colours. Some change with the seasons and some bear fruit for us to enjoy. What is your favourite thing about trees? My favourite thing is that trees give us fresh air to breath and I am in awe that God has created such a beautiful life giving part of nature.
Did you know that most paper towel is created from virgin tree fibre and most often used only once? Did you know that it takes over 51,000 trees every single day to supply North American’s paper towel habit which in turn creates more than 3,000 tons of paper towel waste EVERY SINGLE DAY!!
This is not a sustainable solution to spills, messes and accidents around your home. Many times 1 piece isn’t even enough to actually do the job. It’s expensive too.
Our family of 5 spent 100’s of dollars yearly on paper towel. I was a paper towel junkie!! I thought nothing of grabbing several sheets while I was prepping meals and working around in my kitchen. We would take 5 rolls for a weekend camping trip! Isn’t that crazy? I used paper towel so often throughout the day for spills on the counter, messes on the floor as well as for my windows and mirrors. Until…
Norwex! Well, actually the really cool Counter Cloths. They are perfect little cloths that have BacLock technology. They are made with Norwex Microfiber which is one of the most superior microfibres available. They come with a very pretty counter holder which takes up less room than the average paper towel holder. Clean Life Episode 1
Is Your Messy House Making You Sick?
Did you know that having an unorganized, messy or dirty home can cause you a great deal of anxiety? Scientific studies have shown this fact! In a paper published in 2010, D. Saxbe & R. Repetti talk about their study which followed both men and women as they toured and described their respective homes. There was a definite link between the study subjects, the description of the homes, the cortisol level and depressed mood. When a wife spoke about her home in a negative way with words like messy or cluttered she literally had changes in her cortisol levels. And not in a good way! We know that these fluctuations can affect mood, and over time the health of a person. High blood pressure, poor diet, no exercise routine and anxiety are just a few of the affects. So this topic is serious.
I remember as we were raising our own children; we tried to maintain our home as our sanctuary. A place of rest and although not always spotless clean, we kept things organized and tidy. The kids each had their own rooms which allowed them ‘full personal expression’. Keeping them as they wished. At times this wore on us as parents but we felt it was important that they have something that they were personally responsible for. It was interesting though to observe them as their rooms got more out of control how they would eventually call for help. “Mom, help me clean my room!” Which a generally did – I was ready to see their floor too.
So my point is this. Sometimes our homes get messy, unorganized and even dirty, but what happens if we just let this be our normal everyday life? In a matter of days, weeks or months – this can have a real negative impact on your mental and physical health. It can cause you anxiety because you definitely don’t want anyone to just pop by and see your mess. It can cause you to lose or misplace important items which can cause you stress – especially when you are trying to find your car keys and you are already late for work because the shirt you thought was clean wasn’t and you had to figure out another outfit. You know what I am talking about. Some would say, “life happens.” And leave it at that.
I am here today to help you not only understand the why but the how you need to solve your dilemma of a messy, unorganized or dirty house. I am going to give you 3 steps to get you on track to creating a Safe Haven in your home and get you on track to a clean life.
